Gill Industries, Inc: A Legacy of Innovation and Excellence in Concrete Repair Since 1954

Gill Industries, Inc. was founded in 1954 by E. Gilbert Caroline, affectionately known as "Gill." Initially focused on erecting clarifiers, sludge incinerators, and boilers, Gill recognized the need for permanent solutions to damaged concrete. To address this, he formed Gill Chemical Company and introduced Gill 33® Superbond, the first concrete repair product developed using microsilica technology, which was pioneered in Germany.

In the late 1980s, Roger L. Barrett joined the company, where he immediately set out to expand the product line and significantly increase Gill Industries, Inc’s footprint in the concrete industry. By the early 90’s, Roger had purchased the company from the original founder and took full ownership to continue growing the business and deepen customer relationships with the same hands-on leadership and work ethic he was known for.

A proud graduate of Marshall University, Roger went on to serve his country as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Fort Benning, where he earned the distinguished title of Airborne Ranger—an accomplishment that reflected his strength, determination, and leadership. Outside of work, Roger had a deep love for cars and motorsports. He was a passionate supporter of West Virginia’s only NASCAR Cup Series track and proudly sponsored the car that still holds the fastest lap record there. His passion eventually led him to the IMSA Series, where he was involved with sponsorship of a car to remain closely connected to the sport he loved. That connection fueled his own racing journey, and he soon began competing at tracks up and down the East Coast.

What many people didn’t know was that Roger’s love for racing found its way into the business, too. When developing his family of concrete repair products, he named them using the numbers of his favorite race car drivers. While customers often assumed the names were technical or formula-based, they were really just another expression of his passion for the sport he loved so much.

In August 2000, Roger’s final race became his last. He passed away doing something he truly loved. His sudden loss left a tremendous void—but also a legacy worth protecting.

About Catherine

As Roger’s daughter, Catherine had the honor to step in and continue what he had built with the same grit, commitment, and persistence he instilled in her. At the time, Catherine had graduated from West Virginia University with a BS in Accounting and was working in the hospitality industry. She and her husband Shane joined forces to keep Gill Industries, Inc. running and continue serving the customers who had become part of their extended family.

In 2004, after the birth of her first child, Catherine stepped away from the day-to-day operations and moved into a more behind-the-scenes role. While raising her three children became the main focus, Catherine stayed actively involved in the direction of the company and its continued growth. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family, soaking up the peace of the coastal life, and cheering on her favorite teams.

About Shane

For over 25 years, Shane has been the steady force behind Gill Industries, Inc.—stepping in during a time of deep loss and stepping up to carry the company forward. From day one, he committed himself to learning everything about all aspects of the products. With no technical background, he learned hands on, directly from longtime customers and distributors who generously took him under their wings after Roger’s passing so that the legacy could be continued. Many of those early mentors have since passed on, but their early guidance and influence remains a part of the foundation Shane continues to build on today.

Under Shane’s direction, Gill Industries, Inc. has grown from a regional company to one with national and international reach—including partnerships in South America and distributorships across the U.S. He has traveled the country applying Gill products in stadiums, highways, casinos, theme parks, and factories where some of America’s favorite foods and products are made. When asked about his favorite project over the past 25 years, Shane couldn’t name just one. Instead, he said his favorite part has always been watching the customer’s reaction the moment they see Gill 33® Superbond perform exactly the way he said it would. That moment of trust confirmed—that’s what drives him.

While Roger created a broad family of concrete repair products, Shane refined our focus—streamlining the line down to our three best performers and doubling down on our flagship product, Gill 33® Superbond, the only liquid admixture of its kind on the market.

Outside of work, you will find Shane fishing—whether it’s the black waters of the Waccamaw River or the salty breeze of Winyah Bay. He’ll tell you its not called catching for a reason but for him it’s not about how many fish he brings home—it’s about the escape from reality and the memories made along the way.
